The energy and environmental engineering cluster ECO WORLD STYRIA was elected the worldwide number 1 in the ranking of the international Cleantech Group (USA), and thus underlines the leading position of Styrian companies.
This award is an impressive confirmation for the cluster work of Styria/Austria. “In 2008 alone, around 2,000 new jobs were created. Within only five years, ECO WORLD STYRIA has been able to climb to the very top in energy and environmental engineering”, emphasises Christian Buchmann, member of the Styrian provincial government.
The Cleantech Group with its headquarters in Atlanta is a global investment network in the “clean technologies” area and has been generating worldwide rankings according to especially developed criteria for years. So far, countries and universities had been focussed on; this year, the criteria were applied to environmental engineering clusters for the first time.
“150 companies generate a turnover of 2.7 billion Euros in environmental engineering, which is comparable with around 8 % of the regional gross domestic product. With 22 %, the average growth over the last years was substantially higher than the global market growth, which indicates that world market shares were won. Thus, Styria records the highest density of “clean technologies” companies, as Cleantech study author Shawn Lesser justifies the decision. Furthermore, he highlights the pioneer work and innovative power of the Styrian companies.
In positions 2 to 5 of the ranking follow clusters from New England, Finland, Canada and Denmark (comp. http://cleantech.com/news/5640/top-10-cleantech-clusters).
Bernhard Puttinger, Managing Director of ECO WORLD STYRIA sees it as a confirmation of the strategy over the past years: “Thus we have achieved our vision to become the “clean technologies” location number 1.” As an objective until 2015 he states doubling of the number of companies with global engineering leadership by focussing on 5 strategic innovation levers.
ECO WORLD STYRIA was founded in 2005, and today, for the first time, comprises more than 150 member companies. Currently, there are a total of around 13,000 green jobs in these Styrian engineering companies. The supporting organisations are the Styrian Business Promotion Agency (SFG), the Federal Province of Styria as well as the City of Graz.
