Binder+Co, a machinery and plant manufacturer in the Green Tech Valley is setting a worldwide new trend in the development of building materials with Bublon, a new production procedure. The plant, which was constructed together with Chinese engineers, now produces expanded, closed cell perlite. Even without curing, the “popcorn” absorbs hardly any water making it an ideal choice for use in insulation, plastering or bricks. For it’s innovative approach, Binder+Co received the German Open Innovation Award.
„Popcorn“ with outstanding insulation properties
When perlite and obsidian are heated their volume multiplies up to 20-fold because of the bonded water in the starting stock. BUBLON uses the feature of these highly abundant raw materials – in a similar way to the production of popcorn – in order to produce an outstanding base material for the manufacture of construction products with excellent insulation properties. Using appropriate binders, the "Popcorn" produced in the BUBLON plants can be processed into lightweight building materials such as insulation boards, or as light weight filler for plasters and mortars, or to fill hollow building blocks to improve the insulating properties.
